BMW wins top awards for best engine of the year, thanks to i8, M3 and M4

Each year, the magazine Engine Technology International publishes a list of the best engines of the past 12 months, arranged by category. The jury is composed of 65 journalists from 31 countries engine, and its results are very relevant in the industry.

Chest manufacturers take these awards, it is a guarantee for their technologies as they come issued by the international press. It is a matter of pride for them to say they have won several times these awards, or have imposed on their rivals.

This time, the first three have all three cylinders

BMW has taken him little difference in vote--for Ford title International Engine of the Year. The winning combination has been the BMW i8, a hybrid gasoline-electric plug-in that combines a three-cylinder engine with an electric motor to yield 362 hp.

Second it has been the three-cylinder turbo, followed closely by fellow tricilíndrico 1.2 Puretech PSA Peugeot Citroën and the 4.5 naturally aspirated V8 Ferrari. These engines have been leaders in their respective categories, ordered by displacements. The results of the vote to Best International Engine of the Year It remained like this:

The turbocharged three-cylinder engine Ford 1.0 Ecoboost is one of the most successful, eight awards in four years

Here are several winners who are familiar, having won previous editions in their respective categories. 1.0 Ecoboost engine was better year in 2014, 2013 and 2012, three consecutive editions, which no one has yet succeeded.

In fact, Ford notes that in four years, the turbo mill has achieved eight awards. He downsizing consolidates, to our regret. I'm not saying it's bad to have engines of 100 hp per liter, but its benefits are fairly debatable if we get out of the technical data sheets and go to the real world.

And how have been the different categories? Let's see:

The best engines of 2015 by cylindering

  • Less than 1 liter: Ford Ecoboost 1.0 (4th consecutive time)
  • 1.0 to 1.4 liters: PSA Peugeot Citroen turbo 1.2 Puretech
  • 1.4 to 1.8 liters: BMW 1.5 three-cylinder gasoline-electric hybrid
  • 1.8 to 2.0 liters: Mercedes-AMG 2.0 turbo (2nd consecutive year)
  • 2.0 to 2.5 liters: Audi 2.5 TFSI L5 (5th consecutive time)
  • 2.5 to 3.0 liters: BMW M 3.0 biturbo L6
  • 3.0 to 4.0 liters: McLaren V8 biturbo 3.8 (3rd consecutive year)
  • Over 4 liters: Ferrari 4.5 V8

1.2 highlight the case of PSA, which has dethroned the 1.4 TSI of the Volkswagen Group, in a category where nobody paid shade. But VAG sticks out his chest with pentacilíndrico 2.5 TFSI, which leads the category since 2010.

Up to 3 liters, except once Porsche Boxster 2.7 won with his BMW Bullies category nine years are six-cylinder, whether gasoline or diesel. High displacement, McLaren win three times in a row in its category, and Ferrari takes fourth win in the premier class for the fourth consecutive time, although in 2013 he won the 6.3 V12 Berlinetta F12.

Ferrari is another manufacturer leading authority in the fields better than is given, the great and powerful engines

The best engines of 2015 by special categories

Besides, consider the following categories:

  • Best ecological engine: Electric Tesla
  • Best New Engine: BMW 1.5 three-cylinder gasoline-electric hybrid
  • Best engine prestacional: Ferrari 4.5 V8

Tesla opens in the category of better ecological engine, displacing internal combustion engines used in hybrid or electric extended range. BMW already has three victories this year alone thanks to the i8, a coup of authority. As for Ferrari, leads the category of Best prestacional engine since 2011.
